On the Morning Tide, like the author’s earlier book, Long Hammering, continues the challenge of creating a more accurate image of the African American in the history of New York. Using an array of primary and secondary sources, including diary and oral recordings to carefully examine the African American presence in New York from the early 17th century through the late 20th century, the author argues convincingly for a more inclusive history, one that contains a substantially improved image of the African American community.
